I asked Abieuan. He said 'very few'. According to Wiki 1,689 people have some Manx Gaelic, and 59 (fifty-nine) are considered native speakers. That's 2.2% of the population of the Isle of Man.

The linguistic nature of the island is that everyone (76,315) speak English fluently, and one bus load speaks Manx.

Aaah, wasting tax payers money, that old chessnet drawing illusions of a man on a crusade to save the tax payers money. Agent, it's bullshit. Do you know how much it'll cost? In real terms the cost will be very little and much of the change over will come from general wastage anyway. The fact that the Manx Police have agreed to this now may point to the fact that they've identified that now is the opportunity to do this as their Police Vehicles need rebranding anyway. This is certainly the case at the moment in Wales where Give Way signs are gradually been replaced with ones saying Ildiwch too as the signs find themselves in need of repair anyway - of course here in Wales there are people like me trying to lets say hasten need to replace these signs!

Well yes, but that's quite a different situation. For many people Welsh is their first language, in which they communicate all day long. It's only correct that officialdom recognise the living reality of linguistic diversity. But Manx isn't a living reality, is an academic project. _________________ Liberty does not mean all good things, or the absence of all evils

Agent, you're missing the point and trying to combine two issues.
You where just saying it was a waste of tax payers money.
However, as I've mentioned, it could be that it actually costs little or no more than only having "Police" written on the side of their vehicles. Because of why they are used and the nature of that it is they do Police vehicles are given new fresh branding fairly often, it could be that now is a time where this is taking place and therefore it's not actually going to cost any more to add the Manx language too it.
Now you're other argument - the number of speakers of it. Well your right in saying that there are a lot more fluent Welsh speakers, however without the support of those who don't speak Welsh we wouldn't be enjoying the same amout of 'rights' as we are now. Non Welsh speakers as a whole are also more than happy for signs to be bilingual.
The Manx Police are using the Manx Language to give themselves a clear Manx Identity. People don't have actually be fluent Manx Speakers to sppreciate that, they certainly won't need to be worrying themselves about it. |
