Well, I'm not convinced that he would have been labeled as 'British' from anyone from the British Isles prior to the 18/19th century. Apart from, as I say, linguistically. I would expect him to label himself by his language group, tribe and possibly with the emerging Kingdom of Strathclyde. That is all. I don't think any of us can really say how he would have described himself though.

Well the Scots Gaelic for Dumbarton, his capital, translates as Fort of the Britons, and I believe that predates the 18th/19th century.

I can't say I am knowledgable about his life, but he did travel to Wales, Kernow etc - to suggest he was not familiar with his British Celtic status seems silly - particularly as Welsh sources of the time acknowledge the people of Strathclyde as their kin.

that the name Wallace means......Strathclyde Briton.
Wallace comes from the English name for the Celts, Welas, meaning - foreigner, William was descended from Brythonic kin.

You said Kernow rather than Cornwall ! Very Happy
I hope others on this board will follow your example, but we should also use Cymru instead of Wales. Wink
