Ernesto "Che" Guevara is revered as the quintessential revolutionary but his life and legacy as an economist and politician in Cuba is rarely discussed. This forgotten aspect of Guevara's life is the subject of Helen Yaffe's new book, Che Guevara: The Economics of Revolution. Helen will be discussing her book and signing copies afterwards with time for questions.
This book presents a unique exploration of the impact of Che Guevara as economist and politician, providing a comprehensive exploration of a little-discussed, but central, aspect of Guevara's life and career. It provides a comprehensive overview of a forgotten aspect of Che Guevara's life - his economic contributions to Cuba while in government. It contributes to a reassessment of Che Guevara's legacy. The research is based on new archival material, including transcripts of internal meetings, internal reports, and over 70 interviews with nearly 50 of Guevara's closest collaborators. Che Guevara is an iconic figure, four decades after his death. Yet his most significant contribution is largely unknown - his work as a member of the Cuban government is rarely discussed. This book explores his impact on Cuba's economy, through fascinating new archival material and interviews.
This book records Guevara’s contribution to industrial organisation, economic management and socialist political economy debates as a member of the Cuban government. It rescues the history of his work as President of the National Bank, head of the Department of Industrialisation and Minister of Industries from 1959-1965.
