David Cameron and his closest advisers are doing their best to avoid sounding too triumphalist and suffering a "Kinnock moment". However, note that the Labour Party conference wasn't quite as much of a disaster as it might have been. It sounded like at least some of the Labourites actually intend to give Cameron "the Toff" and co a fight. It could get very, very dirty indeed. If it turns out to be more of a fight, then the outcome of the general election might not be quite as certain as it has seemed. Oh, the odds are still heavily on the Tories emerging with the largest number of MPs. But by how much? They are obviously not going to do as well up here as down south, and, depending on how badly they do here, that could present a Cameron government with an early crisis. Also, note that, at present, in any disagreement between the Scottish government and the British government, the Labour Party in Scotland will virtually ALWAYS side with the British government. But, at least so far as some in the Labour Party are concerned, that is liable to change. |

Yeah, and we all know how well gutter negative campaigning based on class goes down with the electorate...

Is there any alternative, palatable or otherwise, for the average old Labour voter though?
The Nats are nats, as are the SSP and other (let's not beat around the bush) dodgy left-wing factions. Then there's the Tories and the Lib Dems, with whom they'd have few ideals in common. |

I suppose that just leaves a whole swathe of further disenfranchised voters.

Leaving the whole 'nat' thing aside, the SNP aren't exactly on the left in the same way as old labour ever where, although I think labelling them as Tory (which is Labour's negative campaigning north of the border) is a bit disingenuous, New Labour is mre tory than the tories are! Whereas SSP and Solidarity are just a bit 'bonkers mad' in many policy respects (sorry rinty) and that Colin Fox, sheesh
