Strategy launched to revitalise Gaelic in its Western Isles stronghold

The Western Isles Language Plan will be launched today at Lews Castle
College in Stornoway by Alex Macdonald convener of Western Isles
Council and Matthew Maciver chairman of Bòrd na Gàidhlig.

The main aim of the plan is to revitalise the communities' confidence
in their language and culture throughout the islands, by promoting
Gaelic use and creating opportunities for Gaelic related employment.
This plan follows public consultation throughout the Western Isles
over the last two years.

Mr Macdonald said: "The plan is an important step in the
strengthening of Gaelic and its status in these islands." Mr Maciver
said: "I warmly welcome this initiative for Gaelic in the Western
Isles and I am particularly pleased to note the partnership between
public and other bodies involved. Bòrd na Gàidhlig is delighted to be
able to support this plan and it will find the experience gained from
its implementation extremely valuable in bringing forward the first
national plan for Gaelic."

The Western Isles Language Plan project was established in 2003 to
research the situation of Gaelic in the Western Isles and to develop
a plan to secure its future. The project comes under the aegis of the
Western Isles Gaelic Language and Culture Forum, part of Community
Planning The project aims are:

To strengthen Gaelic as a language in the family.

To strengthen Gaelic as a language in the community.

To increase the number of Gaelic speakers in the islands.
